Todd VanDerWerff: I think I’m just enough older than you that I had started to question conservative policies in earnest early in the George W. How would you characterize your reaction? What feeling did you leave the theater with? So it’s interesting that we came away with such different perspectives. What I’m trying to say is, I think we’re both the target audience for this movie. We’ve both gotten older and realized that history is always more complex than it seems when you’re young. We’re both old enough to remember both Bush administrations clearly. Now, the two of us are similar in many ways: We were both raised in pretty conservative homes, probably ones that voted Republican. But I can’t figure out what Vice’s motives are, or what we’re meant to take away from the film - and I think some of the fault falls in McKay’s lap. Adam McKay has proved in the past he can skewer his targets with gusto (I’m a big fan of The Big Short). Vice is definitely angry, and it aims its barbs at Cheney and both Bush administrations. But to me, it felt shoddily made and directionless. And I know you liked it much better than I did. Annapurna Pictures Two critics see a movie - with very different resultsĪlissa Wilkinson: Todd, I hated this movie, in a way I’ve hated few movies this year. (Moderate spoilers for the movie follow.) The Bushes and the Cheneys (played by Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell, and Andrea Wright) in Adam McKay’s Vice. So instead of just taking it on myself, I thought the best way to approach the film - in the spirit of conversation and bipartisanship sorely lacking in Washington, partly thanks to the very events chronicled in Vice - would be to have a conversation with Todd about the movie, seeing if we could reconcile our two opinions, or at least help show what critics both like and hate about Vice.Ībove are our respective ratings below is our conversation. That was the case with Vice, when I (Alissa Wilkinson) returned from my recent screening, frustrated and disappointed, and my colleague Todd VanDerWerff said he’d liked the movie. Vox-mark vox-mark vox-mark vox-mark vox-markĪs it happens, Vox’s critics often disagree about movies (though only rarely do we come to blows). But there are other ideas at play here too. And certainly, the movie is not an attempt to convert anyone to a new way of thinking the audience for this sort of film is likely already sympathetic to the most obvious of McKay’s theses, which is that Dick Cheney is a heartless guy. Watching Vice can feel like watching a highlight reel from the late 20th and early 21st century, except not in a good way. The list goes on and on and on, with some folks just walking through scenes briefly like ghosts from the past. But there’s a parade of familiar supporting characters too, including Colin Powell (Tyler Perry), Scooter Libby (Justin Kirk), and Condoleezza Rice (LisaGay Hamilton), as well as many senators, Congress members, Cabinet members, Supreme Court justices, and others. Christian Bale plays Cheney, and he - along with Amy Adams as Cheney’s wife Lynne, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, and Sam Rockwell as George W. Vice is different, perhaps because everyone in it was a public figure and is portrayed by some famous actor. But it was certainly a funny, angry film that offered an inside look at a complicated issue, and made a persuasive argument that left the audience steaming. That movie was also met with divided critical opinions. Of McKay’s body of work, Vice has a lot in common with his previous film, 2015’s The Big Short, which was based on a book by journalist Michael Lewis about four men who saw the housing crisis looming and bet against the market. Early reviews from critics were sharply divided between those who loved the film and those who despised it - as well as plenty who gave it mixed reviews. Few movies in 2018 have been more divisive than Vice, writer-director Adam McKay’s tale of the modern Republican Party as concentrated in the person of former Vice President Dick Cheney. The Allegory of the Cave illustrates the human situation as a parable about ignorance and learning. Plato first explored how philosophy promotes freedom and intellectual curiosity in The Allegory of the Cave, a section in his philosophical treatise The Republic. An example of a philosopher who explored these ideas was Plato, a Greek philosopher who is largely considered one of the founding figures in Western philosophical thought. The merits of various philosophical views are debated intensely among scholars, with some ideas accepted, and others ultimately becoming discredited as society changes, and new facts about life are discovered. In their analysis of these questions, philosophers have developed numerous different theories that have been applied over time. Nevertheless, he remains “facile at managing the impressions he gives to others, ravenous for admiration but contemptuous of those he manipulates into providing it,” and dependent on “constant infusions of approval and admiration.” Social media has revealed traces of this personality, belonging to one who “sees the world as a mirror of himself and has no interest in external events except as they throw back a reflection of his own image,” in us all. “Liberated from the superstitions of the past, he doubts even the reality of his own existence” - wonders, in other words, whether he isn’t one of the shadows himself. “The new narcissist is haunted not by guilt but by anxiety,” Lasch writes The Culture of Narcissism. Over the past decade or so, increasingly sobering glimpses of the outside world have motivated some of us to seek diagnoses of our collective condition from thinkers of the past, such as social theorist Christopher Lasch. Not even you.” With the rise of digital communication in general and social media in particular, a great many of us have ensconced ourselves, by degrees and for the most part unconsciously, inside caves of our own. Their feelings are the only feelings that matter, because other people are just shadows, and shadows don’t feel.” And “if everyone lived in caves, then no one would be real. This propagates “the delusion of the narcissist, who believes that they alone are real. But “unlike the allegory of the cave, where the people are real and the shadows are false, here other people are the shadows.” If you were to show them the world as it actually is, they would reject it as incomprehensible.” Then, Hamm suggests transposing this relationship to reality into life as we know it - or rather, as we two-dimensionally perceive it on the screens of our phones. The world they see in the shadows is not the real world, but it’s real to them. “Instead, they see shadows of that world projected on the cave wall. “Imagine a cave, where those inside never see the outside world,” says narrator Jon Hamm (himself an icon of our Golden Age of Television, thanks to his lead performance in Mad Men). You can see it retold in the video above, a clip drawn from a form as representative of the early 21st century as The Matrix‘s was of the late 20th: Legion, a dramatic television series based on a comic book. Here in real life, about two and a half millennia earlier, one of Plato’s dialogues had conjured up a not-dissimilar scenario. That era-defining blockbuster’s cavalcade of slick visual effects came delivered atop a plot about humanity’s having been enslaved - plugged into a colossal machine, as I recall, like an array of living batteries - while convinced by a direct-to-brain simulation that it wasn’t. The Matrix gave a generation or two reason to reconsider, or indeed first to consider, Plato’s allegory of the cave. That also has been taken care of by BuildMaster.įinally, with all the canned actions BuildMaster has made available it is easy for our deploy analysts who aren’t necessarily developers to implement build and deploy processes. It’s also worth mentioning that with our old way of doing things, while the team prepared for production nothing could be approved and it had a ripple effect of delaying other aspects of deployment as well. There has been a definite savings of 48 hours a week or so, which is 200 developer hours/month. Now it doesn’t take any time, because it’s all in BuildMaster. To be more specific, we previously had 2 full time employees spending two full days to plan for release. “It has provided us the flexibility to manage our releases” It has provided us the flexibility to manage our releases, because we do over 450 releases into production a year. Now we have a nice dashboard so we can see the stage per each release, and the status of approvals. It gave us the ability to manage the releases electronically, whereas in its manual state it was very messy and error prone. The nice thing about BuildMaster is that it is not only a build tool, but it is also a deployment tool. What are some of the benefits switching to BuildMaster ensures for our end users? That’s when we purchased BuildMaster, commissioned Inedo’s professional services, and we worked it out piece by piece. What I found was that I could mirror the same manual processes we were already doing, except automate it with BuildMaster, so there wasn’t necessarily a process change so much as just automating that process, which was ideal. BuildMaster seemed perfect for us based on OE Connection’s culture and processes. One of my teammates saw an ad for BuildMaster on The Daily WTF, and it was the first I’d heard of it. What lead to you considering BuildMaster? This was causing so much pain for OEConnection that I was brought on to simplify and automate the processes. As you can imagine we also lost entire teams of people regularly because of this. The team working on it would normally have to work all weekend to get the deploy into production and get the bugs worked out. The entire build-release process, from change request documents for web config files, to keeping track of all the releases and how they relate to one another, was completely manual. Prior to BuildMaster we were on monthly release cycle with one “mega build” per month. OEConnection bought UK-based Clifford Thames Group to try and broaden its global footprint in 2017 however, the acquisition hasn’t gone as well as planned. Over the years, the game had sequels Grand Prix 2, 3, and 4 (based on 1994, 1998, with a 2000 update, and 2001 respectively). The game, released in 1992, was based on the 1991 season. Previously, most racing games representing Formula One, such as Accolade's Grand Prix Circuit and Electronic Arts' Ferrari Formula One, had been arcade-style games, but F1GP paid more attention to the physics of the cars, in addition to innovative graphics and accurate rendering of the actual racing tracks.
